Last summer, I had an idea to start a club with my friends to do things for the community.  I thought it would be fun for kids to help other kids.  When school started, I talk to my principal, Mrs. Hoover.  She gave me permission to start the club meet after school.  The school did not endorse or sponsor the club, but Mrs. Hoover gave us support and encouragement. My Mom agreed to help me and came to all our meetings.  The first meeting was open to all 4th and 5th graders and was held Oct. 17, 2007.  20 students came to that meeting and became members.  I decided to name the club Club Save because we wanted to do things to help our community.

I emailed Ms. Shellie (Andrews), Program Director, at RCS Grace House and set up an appointment to take a tour with her.  My Mom and I visited RCS Grace House in February.  I was thinking it would be nice to collect books and set up a bookcase in the front office at RCS Grace House.  After my visit with Ms. Shellie, I decided to try to collect enough books to set up a bookshelf with books in each apartment at RCS Grace House.

At our next Club Save meeting we set a goal of collecting 300 books and donating 12 bookcases to  RCS Grace House.  Then I found out about a youth community service grant that was offered by 4H and we decided to apply for that too.  In March, we found out our club was chosen to receive a grant of $500.00 to help us with our RCS Grace House project.  We purchased 12 new book cases and assembled them at my house.  We designed and drew labels for each bookcase and made labels for each book on the computer.  We were very excited with our final count of 1118 books.  Our goal was to collect 300 books. On May 3, 2008, we went to The Grace House and delivered 12 new bookcases filled with books.

I have learned a lot about serving others from initiating and being a part of Club Save.  I have learned that running a club and helping the community takes organization, effort, and hard work from many.  When I started Club Save, I believed that kids my age could make a difference.  Our club motto is “Small People Can Do Big Things”.  Both of the community service projects we did proved that to me.  Kids our age can make a difference and make the world a better place.
